Downsizing involves more than moving to a smaller home.  Downsizing also means reevaluating how you spend your time and your money.

Ideas on How to Downsize Your Lifestyle

Downsizing is more than just the physical act of moving from a large home to a smaller one. It is a complete change in outlook.

Where once a large space with many lovely things seemed important, joining every club or committee seemed a good idea, and doing all of your home repairs seemed the best financial decision, there comes a time when you find yourself saying, “Enough.” Enough stress. Enough clutter. More “me-time.” More relaxation and enjoying life.

If you feel that you are ready to downsize your lifestyle, here are some tips to get started:

  • Assess  your space to gauge how much you really use. If you find that much of your space is underutilized, it may be time to consider a smaller residence. A    smaller home will reduce costs and will often require less maintenance,  making life easier for you.
  • Give yourself the gift of time by hiring someone to take care of basic maintenance and home repairs.
  • Evaluate your schedule. For many of us, one of the hardest words to say is “no,” but it is important that we free time in our schedules to reduce our stress levels. Consider dropping one activity from your schedule.
  • Take a good, hard look at the things in your house and decide what you really can’t live without. If you haven’t used something in the last two years, donate it or sell it. You will be surprised how quickly a de-cluttered home will lessen stress and simplify your life.

Downsizing is not always easy. For some people, difficult decisions may be involved, but it may be easier if you have a plan composed of small goals, and set a schedule for achieving each goal.
